This charm is called the Della Robbia infant, a replica of one of the glazed terra cotta reliefs that adorn the front of the Foundling Hospital in Florence, Italy. Completed in 1445, the hospital was the first operational orphanage in Europe, and it continued to operate as such until the year 2000! Amazing! It is still dedicated to the care and education of children.

This charm represents the babies wrapped in swaddling clothes who were left at the door of the orphanage. If you do a GOOGLE search, you will see the building and these lovely bas relief medallions which were done by the great Italian artist, Della Robbia. The charm measures just under 1" tall by 3/8" wide by just over 1/8" in depth. It is in wonderful condition and is highly detailed. It is hallmarked 800 for the silver content on its original jump ring.
